Drive System Designer - Nashville

Drive System Designers at Powerhouse Controls are key leaders and mentors to their peers. They actively contribute to the project success by striving for excellence, managing assigned projects within budget and are aware of the defined scope of work. This Drive System Designer position is for an individual with comprehensive experience in design and software development of automation systems and project management for manufacturing industries. The selected candidate will be required to design, program, document, and commission custom controls systems including but not limited to robotic welding cells, press equipment, and automated systems. Typical projects are PLC & HMI upgrades, machine functionality addition, breakdown investigation, safety upgrades, new equipment commissioning, continuous improvement implementation, equipment refurbishment, and machine integration. The successful candidate must be an excellent leader with exceptional time management skills.

Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:

 College level Certificate / Diploma (field of engineering preferred but not mandatory)

 Minimum 5 years of related work experience in design engineering or electrical engineering

 Industry segment experience in steel, paper, and web processing equipment controls, mining equipment controls and automotive control systems

 An excellent communicator both verbal and written in English

 Industrial AC & DC Drives Design experience

 Siemens Sinamics AC, Masterdrives, Sinamics DC (6RA70/80), Simotion programming & commissioning

 Allen Bradley PowerFlex, programming & commissioning

 ABB ACS800, programming & commissioning

 Safety system design, programming and commissioning

 PLC programming and commissioning experience

 Power distribution design including load calculations, component selection and panel layout experience

 Ability and experience working on multiple simultaneous projects working with a team of engineers

 Solid time management skills


 CNC Controls Experience

 PLC communication networks: Profibus, Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, ProfiNet

Job Duties:

 Hardware design, component selection, drive configurations, documentation and commissioning of custom drive and automation systems;

 Travel both locally and globally for commissioning of assigned projects or for service work at our customer’s sites (approximately 10-30% of the time)

 Employing the theories and concepts of engineering with respect to the testing of electrical control systems;

 Meeting with engineers and technicians at customer sites in order to obtain specifications and requirements;

 Working with our engineers and technicians to research engineering solutions;

 Assisting the team of engineers in solving functional engineering problems related to electrical control systems design issues;

 Assisting in the layout, building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modification of developmental and production electronic components, parts, equipment within our various control systems;

 Testing power equipment and systems, industrial process control systems;

 Performing preventative maintenances;

 Setting up and operating specialized and standard test equipment to diagnose, test and analyze the performance of electrical and electronic components, assemblies and systems;

 Writing specifications, schedules and technical reports and control schedules and budgets;

 Improving the overall efficiency of the operation with a view to decrease costs and to improve quality and production;

 Analyzing and interpreting test data in order to adjust, calibrate, align and modify circuitry, components as well as record effects upon unit performance;

 Rendering technical reports with a view toward describing and illustrating the systems’ operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations for consideration by senior management;

 Trouble shooting design problems;

 Completing assigned projects on schedule and within budget while maintaining a high quality solution; and

Position location: Nashville, Tennessee – some travel required
